Reclaim Your Identity

Welcome to Episode 6 of Hustle for Happiness, the podcast that is all about taking action towards a happier and more fulfilling life. In this episode, we’re going to talk about finding yourself after a relationship.

Going through a breakup or divorce can be a challenging and emotional experience. It’s normal to feel lost or uncertain about your future. But the good news is that there are practical steps you can take to rediscover your passions, build your self-confidence, and create a life that is truly fulfilling.

Important Steps

One of the first steps in finding yourself after a relationship is to understand that everyone copes with their emotions in their own unique way. Some people process emotions through crying, while others might write about their feelings in a journal or engage in physical activities such as exercise or sports. Listening to music or creating art as a form of self-expression, practicing mindfulness or meditation to help manage difficult emotions, or seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor are also effective ways to cope with emotions.

As an adopted person (here’s my story), it can be especially challenging to navigate feelings of confusion and uncertainty about your past. It’s understandable that you may feel frustrated or hurt when people make assumptions about your life that aren’t accurate. However, it’s important to remember that you have the power to define your own story and to seek out support from people who will listen and understand.

If you’re struggling to find yourself after a relationship, taking time to grieve is an important step. It’s important to allow yourself to feel the emotions that come with a breakup, whether it’s sadness, anger, or confusion. You can give yourself permission to cry, journal, or talk to a trusted friend or therapist. By processing your emotions, you can begin to move forward and heal.

Another important step is to reconnect with yourself and your passions. After a breakup, it’s easy to lose your sense of self and feel like you don’t know who you are anymore. But by trying out a new hobby or activity that you’ve always wanted to do, making a list of your values and priorities in life, or spending time in nature to clear your mind and gain perspective, you can begin to rediscover what makes you happy and fulfilled.

Practicing self-care is also crucial during this time (Download your Self Care Bucket List). Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally can help you feel more grounded and resilient. This might include getting enough sleep and exercise, eating nutritious foods and drinking plenty of water, practicing mindfulness or meditation to reduce stress and anxiety, or prioritizing your well-being by setting boundaries and establishing positive relationships (Self Care Episode).

Remember, finding yourself after a relationship is a journey, not a destination. It takes time, patience, and self-compassion to heal and move on. But by following these practical tips and seeking support when needed, you can emerge from the breakup stronger and more self-aware than before.
